Service Description
This course is intended to give the trainee the fundamentals of spacecraft and CubeSats system design. In the first week of the course, introduction to spacecraft systems is given through a wide range of real mission concept examples spanning from hyperspectral imagining satellites to EHF communication satellites. The mission concepts are aimed to demonstrate the fundamental structure of a space mission and how this structure strongly hinges on the payload driven operation concepts. The universally acknowledged approach to space mission design is presented. The elements of every typical space mission (such as launch systems, ground control centers) and their interaction with the satellite system design is identified. The main steps of a space mission design and the necessary infrastructure (and standards) to support the mission concept is reviewed through examples. Specifically mission orbit design based on payload operations and the mission concept needs (such as coverage area, revisit times) is presented. Launch systems and associated logistics to support such an orbit is shown. In addition, the space and launch environment for the selected orbit and its impact on the satellite design and testing is identified. Lastly, to support the mission, the necessary infrastructure spanning the design, testing and the operation phase of the satellite is shown.
